Damage is, simply put, the amount of health that is subtracted from the defender when an attack connects. The amount of damage a given move may do is influenced by the scaling of the combo as well as if the move was a counter hit or not.
Recoverable Health
In Tekken 8, certain types of damage will leave an amount of health within a white outline, sometimes referred to as white or grey health. This type of health allows a player to replenish a small amount of it back into regular health by causing their opponent to block or get hit by their moves.
- Hits against a standing opponent will not grant an opponent any recoverable health, such as when landing a stray low or a throw unless the opponent is in Heat starting in season 2. Attacks hitting a standing opponent will also remove some amount of the opponent’s recoverable health equivalent to 30% of the attack's damage unless the opponent is in Heat. Throws do not remove any additional recoverable health (with some exceptions such as Nina's df2+4)
- Attack damage from hitting the opponent while the opponent is airborne, such as after getting launched, after a low parry or from floating your opponent mid air is divided between 70% recoverable damage and 30% permanent damage. Heat dash combos only deal recoverable damage after the heat dash launcher, but may kill the opponent.
- When the defender is in Heat, guaranteed followups, such as those from combo launchers, only deal recoverable damage, but may kill the opponent. Juggle combos will often leave the opponent with a large amount of recoverable health, with a larger percent when the defender is in Heat. In season 2, 30% of attack damage received by opponents in heat when standing or crouching is converted to recoverable damage
- Stage breaks will either deal recoverable damage or remove recoverable damage. Wall bounds, wall blasts and floor blasts deal 5 recoverable damage. Wall breaks, floor breaks and balcony breaks remove 15 recoverable damage.
- Attack reversals generally only deal recoverable damage rather than only a portion of it. However, there are some exceptions (Clive's reversal with a 2 followup, Shaheen's punch parry, and Dragunov's sabaki).
- Landing a Heat Engager will replenish an additional 30 recoverable health on top of whatever the move normally regenerates on hit.
- In Heat, attacks deal 20% of their attack damage as chip damage when the attack is blocked. However, moves that already deal chip damage on block without heat are unaffected unless the move's damage is specifically enhanced in Heat (such as Paul's charged f+1+2). Heat Dashes deal 2 additional chip damage on top of the 20%, and heal the user for 3 points on block, and 6 points on hit.
- Prior to the 2.00.02 update, all these values used to be higher; attacks dealt 30% damage as chip on block, dedicated chip moves stacked the 30% bonus, and Heat Dashes dealt an additional 10 recoverable damage (7 after season 1 concluded).
- When the defender is in Rage, the amount of chip damage received is reduced to approximately 30-33% of the original chip damage to around 9%-12% of the chip damage dealing move's raw damage. In season 1, rage did not affect the scaling of heat dashes' base 10 recoverable damage dealt on block, only the scaling of the hit's chip damage; in season 2, the base recoverable damage dealt on block by heat dashes is reduced from 2 to 1.
- Rage Arts along with some character specific options will remove all of an opponent's recoverable health on hit.
Health Recovery
In Tekken 8, landing an attack on hit or block recovers health depending on the move's damage and if the attacker is in heat. Some moves such as Clive's PHX.2,1 may recover additional recoverable health. A few moves such as Yoshimitsu's NSS.1+4 may recover base health.

Chip Damage
Another new addition in Tekken 8 is the plethora of moves that deal damage to a defender even while they're blocking.
- All chip damage is dealt as recoverable health.
- Chip damage such as from heat bursts cannot KO unless dealt on hit as part of a combo or Heat Dash combo.
