Discussion page of User:Oldmanwang/Notable players

This kind of page is pretty dangerous since then we have to deal with self-promotion and debating whether or not a player is “Notable”. I think the best approach is to piggyback off of Liquipedia, saying that a player is notable only if they have an article there as a Tekken player (e.g. AK), and just linking to it from this page. This way we offload the notability criteria and article writing to Liquipedia, who are already experienced dealing with this. RogerDodger (talk) 02:25, 27 January 2021 (UTC)

I think Needing them to have a Liquipedia page is a bit much. A player like Boaluvb is a well-known high level competitor, but he doesn't have Liquipedia page yet.

I think the 'notable' tag can be a loosely agreed upon definition, for any player that is indisputably playing at the highest level, or has done so at some point. This allows for players like Imyourfather, Only Practice, etc.
That's basically what Liquipedia's Notability Guidelines are: a fairly objective standard based on tournament results. If the definition is loose, this list will quickly be overflowing with semi-popular streamers and only regionally competitive players, and it'll be a pain in the neck to adjudicate. Liquipedia are already doing the hard part here, so doing it ourselves is a lot of redundant work. Of those currently listed here that don't have a page, based off searching their names for tournament results, I think Boaluvb, HelpMe, Imyourfather, and Mulgold would qualify. Someone just needs to make the page. And Fran, Furumizu, and Only Practice would probably not qualify. The players Liquipedia are missing are not missing because of a failure of policy, but just because nobody's gotten around to making an article for them yet.
I can't see us getting a list more “correct” than this. However, we could improve that list by adding the country they're from and what characters they're known to play. RogerDodger (talk) 06:27, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
My idea for the page was mainly a place people can go to find strong players of particular characters, that have footage online to study and hopefully they can discern possible playstyles for that character. For example aris and justinwong are on the liquipedia page, but I wouldn't necessarily consider them top level t7 players.
Perhaps that could be worked into Template:Infobox fighter? An “Active players” field, with links to their Liquipedia page (if it exists) or a link to their Twitch or YouTube channels if not. The use case for this is competing with someone searching e.g. "jin tekken 7 gameplay" into YouTube, which as it is... doesn't actually work as well as I thought it would. Can have some criteria in the Infobox doc and maybe a limit of 4(?) players to stop it getting too long. RogerDodger (talk) 07:44, 27 January 2021 (UTC)
Sounds like a good idea to me. Can then dedicate this page to being a convenient snapshot of the pro scene.
