Stage

A stage is the location of a fight and can differ in the size and shape of the wall and whether there are any stage breaks.

In tournaments, the typical rules are that the first match is on a random stage, and every match after that the loser chooses; the loser may instead opt to change character, which leads to another random stage being chosen.

Types of stages

Infinite stage

Stages with no walls whatsoever with a looping background to create the illusion of an endless field (e.g. Infinite Azure). These create slower paced games with far less potential for the attacker to snowball their offense, benefiting characters that are either more defensive or don't rely on wall pressure.

Large stage

Infinite stages are currently not present in Tekken 8—instead, there are simply a couple stages that are significantly larger than most (Coliseum of Fate and Yakushima). Though these may be infinite for most intents and purposes, many characters with good wall carry can actually hit the wall on these stages eventually without too much difficulty.

Octagon stages

Small to normal sized stages that are in the shape of an octagon, allowing more wall re-splats and tech traps.

Square stages

Small to normal sized stages that are in the shape of a square. It's typically a bit easier to escape being pinned against the wall on a square stage, as the shape of it allows for more breathing room once you've stepped to safety.

Break stages

Stages typically recognized for their prominent gimmick of stage breaking. Certain characters may benefit from these gimmicks heavily, allowing huge damage reward off of things that wouldn't normally give any combo at all, such as Paul's Deathfist.

Unique stages

Certain stages in older Tekken games may have misaligned starting positions, such as Souq in Tekken 7, and may generally have unique wall size configurations never seen on any other stage in the series.
