Katarina (Kat) is a bare-bones, poke-heavy, counterhit-baiting character. She is great for beginners due to her low execution requirements on key moves and staple combos, as well as her simple-to-understand gameplan. Her main focus is to use pokes to annoy her opponent into attacking when they shouldn't, leading to some huge damage payoffs for Kat if she succeeds. She benefits a lot from good fundamentals and the ability to pick up on your opponent's tendencies.
Katarina can struggle to open defensive opponents up due to a lack of strong lows. She has either very high-risk/high-reward lows, or low damage pokes which don't give her momentum to continue pressure.
Strengths
- Simple Gameplan: Katarina's strong df+1, ,4 and ,4 allow her to easily start playing a fundamental Tekken poking game.
- Easy Execution: Katarina's inputs and combos are as easy as they come, with no qcfs or tight links in sight.
- Counterhit Monster: Katarina has a variety of CH tools in df+4, b+4 and d+2 that cover a wide variety of timings and ranges.
- Damaging Combos: When Katarina gets a launch, it hurts. Her BnB combo off of her standard i15 launcher hits for a respectable 72 damage.
- Good Whiff Punishment: With easy inputs and long range on her whiff punishers like ,2, ,4 and ,4, whiffing against Katarina will get punished hard.
Weaknesses
- Poor Lows: Katarina's lows don't encourage an opponent to duck; either dealing low damage (d+3) or being very risky if blocked (df+3+4, db+3, db+4).
- Poor Homing Moves: A slow homing move in f,F+4 and a low reward tracking tool for her weak side (,2 means Katarina gets stepped to the right all day.
